The search is on for Sunderland’s past members of the Armed Forces and their families.
Sunderland Armed Forces Network (SAFN) is inviting veterans from the city to apply for their Veteran’s Badge.
The network launched a similar appeal last year, which saw 230 applications received and 26 of the applicants receiving their badge in a presentation by the Mayor of Sunderland in the Mayoral Parlour.
SAFN Chairman Graham Hall said: “Every year we hold this event and it is a great success and we ensure that veterans once again have the chance to have their service recognised.
“We are asking applicants to contact us and we will send them a form to be returned to us and we will do the rest.”
Plans are now being made for another badge presentation event to be held at the Armed Forces Week flag raising Ceremony at the Civic Centre on Wednesday, June 21.
We have ensured over 700 veterans have received their badges so far but there are more entitled to receive one.Graham Hall
But Graham Hall emphasised there was no need to attend the presentation ceremony in order to receive a badge.
“Sunderland has the highest proportion of veterans of any city in the UK, with over 26,500 veterans,” said Mr Hall.
“We have ensured over 700 veterans have received their badges so far but there are more entitled to receive one. Those who may not want to be part of the presentation are still welcome to apply for their badges and we will have them sent directly to their homes” .
The criteria to receive a Veteran’s Badge is that you must have adult service in the regular or reserve forces or be in receipt of a Armed Forces Widows or Widowers Pension.
It is immaterial how long you served or when you served or what age you are as everyone is classed as a veteran upon discharge.
