CHARITY champs were awarded for dipping their toes in the water to raise thousands of pounds for worthy causes.

This year’s Boxing Day Dip presentation took place at The Chesters, Chester Road, last night.

Gongs were handed out for the largest collection by a group, most amount raised for Cancer Research and special merit.

Echo editor Rob Lawson was on hand to present Murton and East Durham Musical Theatre Group with the Echo Cup for the best team fancy dress.

Lion president Anne Fielding said that more than £53,000 has been counted in so far from the event, with more to come.

“It’s amazing how the competitors keep turning up year after year,” said Mrs Fielding.
