A COUPLE who first met on the bride’s 18th birthday have celebrated 60 years of marriage with family and friends.
When Irene and John Priest met in a Sunderland social club in the early 1950s, it was love at first sight.
The pair were soon engaged, and, two years later they married in St Aidan’s Church in Grangetown, on July 24, 1954.
Irene, 82, who worked in various clothing factories, and husband John, 81, worked at Hepworth’s before joining Rolls Royce, before retiring.
They have two sons, nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, with whom they marked their diamond wedding with a party at Lakeside Social Club.
When asked the secret to a long and happy marriage, Irene said: “Just agree with each other and if you have a tiff, you make up straight away.”
