Should women tennis players receive the same prize money as the men?
The All England Club has revealed that this year’s Wimbledon singles champions will walk away with £1.1m in prize money.
The sum is up by £100,000 from last year and will be awarded to both men and women singles champions at this year’s Wimbledon Championships.
Wimbledon made the announcement of the increase and a total increase in the prize fund of 6.4 percent during their annual spring conference.
The increase means they are awarding their champions less than both the Australian Open and the US Open but more than the French Open.
The All England Lawn Tennis Club Chairman said: “Leading international sports events such as Wimbledon are all about the quality of the players on show. In the competitive world of top level sport, it is important we offer prize money which suitably rewards the players for the box office appeal they bring to the event and for their supreme performances on court.”
