SHOULD Britain ban the Islamic veil?
FRANCE’S ban on face veils came into force yesterday, meaning women wearing the Islamic niqab or burqa in public could be fined 150 euros (£132) or be given lessons in French citizenship.
The French government passed the law last October and bans any item that conceals the face, though there are exceptions such as motorbike helmets, skiing masks and costume worn at festivals.
The law is seen by some as a direct affront at Muslims. Though police are told not to ask women to remove their burqa in the street, guidelines say they can be escorted to a police station and asked to remove the veil there for identification.
The British Conservative-Lib Dem Government has said it does not mean a burqa ban should be introduced here. Do you agree?
