A DAD who discovered a park littered with used condoms has spoken of his anger – after council chiefs said it would be days before they were cleared.

James Elsey came across the mess in the play area off Grindon Lane, Grindon, as he walked with daughter Faye, eight, and family friends.

The youngsters thought the condoms – some of which were tied to the fence – were balloons.

Mr Elsey called Sunderland City Council on a Friday afternoon to ask the area be cleared as a matter of urgency, but was furious to be told it would not be done for three days.

The 32-year-old from Thorney Close said: “I counted 10 used condoms in that area. It’s a danger to the kids – who knows what they could catch from them.

“The council said it would be Monday. Talk about things that are desperately needed.”

A council spokesman said: “We work hard to keep our parks, green spaces and streets clean and safe, and we do our utmost to respond quickly and effectively to any concerns.

“On this occasion, the call had not been classed as a priority.”
