THE National Childbirth Trust (NCT) says that funding cuts could put expectant Wearside mums at risk.
The group claims that without the money to train up practitioners, midwifery services will be overstretched.
As well as reducing services for expectant parents, NCT claims new mums will not be able to return to work as quickly as they would have hoped.
The group has written to Sunderland Central MP Julie Elliott protesting at the cuts.
Chief executive Belinda Phipps said: “Every year, NCT helps about 1,080 new mothers in Sunderland.
“We know Mrs Elliott wants to support local families, so we hope she will help us meet the minister responsible for this policy so we can put our case forward.
“We encourage everyone to write to Mrs Elliott to show their support for NCT.”
