A POPULAR fish and chip shop is hoping to serve up award-winning grub for the second year running.
The Ritz chippy in Washington is in the running once again to scoop a top gong for its perfect portions as part of a national competition to hunt out the best chips in the country.
Now, owner Manveer Singh, 29, of Oxclose, is urging faithful customers to back his bid to walk away with the perfect portion crown.
He said: “The competition starts next week as part of National Chip Week and we would love to be nominated once again by our customers.
“So many people come into our shop and love our chips, we’re always very busy and get a lot of people complementing us on our food.
“We are well known and have worked hard to build up a good reputation and it seems to have paid off.”
Manveer, who has run the Oxclose Road shop for four years, said it his passion for cooking combined with a top secret way of cooking the chips that has led to his success.
He said: “We have our own special way of cooking the chips, which are fried in beef dripping to make them extra tasty.”
Last year, Manveer was named joint runner-up in the regional section of the Perfect Portion Awards, alongside Humbledon Fisheries in Humbledon.
They narrowly missed out on the top title, which went to Smith’s Chippy in South Shields.
Manveer said: “We did really well in last year’s competition and were runners-up.
“This year we are determined to get the top spot. All we need now is people’s votes so if people out there like our chips then get voting.”
The Perfect Portion Awards, sponsored by the Potato Council, aims to find Britain’s tastiest chips.
The annual competition coincides with National Chip Week, which starts on Monday and celebrates the one of the nation’s favourite foods.
