A SEX attacker has finally confessed he raped a girl more than 15 years ago.

Clifford Redhead was due to stand trial at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday accused of raping the youngster.

The attack on the girl, who was aged under 16, happened in Sunderland in the late 1990s. But before the case got under way, 52-year-old Redhead, of Monroe Place, Newcastle, pleaded guilty to a single charge of rape.

Judge Penny Moreland adjourned the case for the preparation of reports.

She said Redhead, who had been on bail, must remain in custody until he is sentenced in January.

The judge said: “The inevitable sentence here is a lengthy period of custody.

“I remand you remand you in custody to await sentence.”

Katherine Dunn, defending, had applied for Redhead, who is physically and mentally unwell, to be allowed bail to attend a hospital appointment in three weeks. Miss Dunn said: “He has been on bail throughout.

“He is fully aware there is only one sentence that can be imposed and that is custodial, and one measured in years rather than months.

“He is an extremely ill man. He is due to go back to hospital in three weeks because of problems with his pancreas and has mental health problems.”

Judge Moreland rejected the application for Redhead’s bail to be extended.
