A WOMAN threw the first punch at an attacker when he tried to rob her.

The 19-year-old went to the cashpoint on Wood’s Terrace, Murton, at 1.30am on Sunday, to see if she had money to get a taxi to a friend’s house.

After walking through the alleyway next to the Co-op and on to the grass behind the street, she was approached from behind by a man who tried to take her purse.

She struck him to force him off, but he punched her in the face, leaving her with a lump to her cheekbone.

He then ran off towards the Barnes Road area of the village.
