‘Wonky-eyed’ man wanted after Sunderland assault

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man was assaulted in Sunderland.

Around 10.15am on Thursday, April 18, the man was approached by two men in Woodbine Street, Hendon, and threatened. One of the men grabbed him by the throat while the other damaged the man’s van with an axe. They then fled the area.

The first man is described as being white, around 5ft 6ins tall and in his 40s. He had stubble, one of his eyes was described as “slightly wonky” and he was wearing a blue woolly hat.

The second is also white, around 6ft tall, in his 20s and of big build. He was wearing a dark hoody with red piping and was carrying the axe.

Neighbourhood Insp Jamie Southwell said: “This was an extremely frightening incident for the victim and with it happening in the street mid morning there was lots of people around who could have potentially seen what happened.

“I’d urge anyone that was in the area around Woodbine Street, in Hendon, yesterday morning and who might have seen anything to contact us as soon as possible with any information.”
