A SHOPKEEPER is recovering in hospital after he was attacked in an armed raid.
The 48-year-old, who has not been named, was working at the store he runs in Oxclose, Washington, when at least two men burst in.
Police say they are treating the incident at the Oxclose Convenience Store, in Oxclose Village Centre, as an attempted robbery.
The victim is being treated for serious head injuries at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead, which are not thought to be life-threatening.
Officers believe two or more men entered the store on Friday night and attacked the member of staff, before leaving empty handed.
The injured man managed to make his way home and police were called.
Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area between 7pm and 10pm on Friday and who may have seen or hear anything suspicious to contact them.
Residents have told of their shock after the incident.
Retired 68-year-old Len Davey, from Oxclose, said: “It’s a bit of a surprise to hear that something like that has happened.”
But another Oxclose resident, who did not want to be named, said: “I’m not really surprised that there is trouble like this in this day and age.”
