POLICE in Sunderland are reminding people to keep their belongings safe after a series of bag and purse thefts.

A woman has been arrested and is helping police with their enquiries into a number of thefts, the majority from city centre pubs and clubs.

Sunderland city centre Neighbourhood Inspector Mick Hall, said: “Our priority is ensuring people can enjoy a night out in the city centre and not have their night ruined by having their bag or purse stolen.

“By making sure they keep personal items, such as mobile phones and purses, in a safe place they are making it harder for these thieves - the majority of these are opportunist.

“We want people to make sure they keep their bags safe, don’t leave it unattended hanging on the back of a chair or lying on a table.

“Keep your bag with you at all times and make sure it is zipped or fastened securely.”

The advice forms part of Operation Soundwave, aimed at tackling crimes such as theft. For more crime prevention advice visit the Northumbria Police website www.northumbria.police.uk
