A MAN has been jailed for stealing bags from an ambulance as a heart attack victim was treated by paramedics.
Lee Henderson was caught on CCTV climbing into the vehicle to take the bag and then returning to snatch a second one.
Meanwhile medics were dealing with the lifesaving call to the elderly woman who was suffering a suspected cardiac arrest.
The theft happened in Conway Road, Chester-le-Street.
Henderson’s crime was captured by the vehicle’s onboard camera, leading to the first occasion in which the North East Ambulance Service has secured a conviction using the equipment.
The 28-year-old, from Pelton, was jailed for 21 months by Durham Crown Court.
Ambulance bosses have said there was no medication inside the bags he stole, but unused syringes and bandages were taken.
The vehicle had to be taken off the road for several hours to be restocked.
The cameras have been fitted to 34 ambulances during the last year to reduce attacks on paramedics.
