Two men in court over death of Sunderland cyclist

TWO men accused of causing the death of a cyclist in a road smash will be tried by a jury.

Edward Peverley and Michael Elton are both accused of causing Stan Coates’s death by careless driving in October.

It is alleged both men hit Mr Coates as he was riding along Burdon Lane in Sunderland.

The 55-year-old, from West Herrington, was airlifted to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, but died from his injuries.

Elton, 24, of Rothbury Road, Newton Hall, and Peverley, 20, of Hetton Moor Farm in Easington Lane, were not asked to enter a plea during a short hearing at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday

They will be back in court on October 10. A trial has been listed for December 16, and is expected to last up to five days. Both men were granted bail.
