Two men assaulted in Sunderland street attack

Two men have been assaulted in a street attack in Sunderland.

Police are appealing for witnesses after two men, aged 20 and 43, were assaulted.

It happened in Roker Avenue at approximately 3.45am today. The incident took place both in the street and also in a nearby house.

There was an altercation between some men in the street and they were assaulted by a number of men, one armed with a wooden baton. Those responsible then left.

The 43-year-old injured man was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital and then transferred to the Royal Victoria Infirmary where he is receiving treatment.

His condition is described as stable. The 20-year-old was also taken to the hospital and released following treatment.

Three people have been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent; two men aged 24 and 20 and a 17-year-old male youth all remain in custody.

Police are carrying out inquiries in the area and additional officers are on patrol to reassure the community.
