Three teenagers have been arrested after a man was attacked in the street by several youths.

The assault happened in Humbledon Park, outside Barnes Convenience Store, in Barnes, Sunderland, at 6.35pm on Monday.

Police arrived to find the 48-year-old man had been attacked and he was taken to hospital with head injuries and was later discharged.

A 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of assault, while a 14-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of affray.

They have all been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Northumbria Police have said extra officers have been on patrol as part of the investigation and to provide reassurance.
