THREE people were arrested after allegedly trying to steal a metal fence.
Police received a report of a scrap van outside a vacant address on Tel El Kebir Road, Hendon, and two men in the backyard who had tried to steal a metal fence.
However, they made off empty-handed after being stopped by a resident.
It happened at about 10.25am on Saturday.
An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were arrested on suspicion of being found on enclosed premises and bailed pending further enquiries.
A 32-year-old woman also arrested will receive no further action. Inspector Sam Rennison, of Sunderland Area Command, said: “Metal theft isn’t a victimless crime and it can have a huge impact on communities and affect people’s quality of lives.
“We will continue to target suspected metal thieves across the city as well as stop scrap metal vans to check they are operating legitimately, legally and that their vehicles are road- worthy.
“I’d ask members of the public to continue providing us with information on any suspicious activity so we can stop metal thieves in their tracks.”
