A THIRD person has been arrested after a diamond engagement ring was snatched.

Jason Lyon, 20, proposed to girlfriend Nicola Waites in the back of a police van after the ring he planned to surprise her with was stolen from The Wynd, Pelton.

The couple arrived home on Boxing Day to discover the £330 ring had been taken during the raid.

A 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary yesterday and is being quizzed by police.

A 30-year-old woman and 33-year-old man have been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Mr Lyon, who had initially planned to ask his 21-year-old girlfriend to marry him on New Year’s Eve, said the earlier than expected proposal was successful, despite the unusual circumstances.

The couple have now been offered a replacement ring by jeweller Sue Sinton, who owns family-run Richard Sinton Jewellers in Eldon Gardens, Newcastle. She was touched when she heard about the theft and offered them a replacement ring up to the value of £500.

Mr Lyon said: “I’m so overwhelmed by the whole thing.”
