A HEARTLESS thief who stole a charity collection box containing money donated to the British Heart Foundation has been ordered to pay £50 in compensation.
Ryan Richardson was also given a six-month conditional discharge after pleading guilty to theft when he appeared at Sunderland Magistrates Court, yesterday.
The 24-year-old, of Azalea Terrace North, walked into Lloyds Pharmacy in Borough Road, at 2.10pm on Sunday. He grabbed the charity box from the counter.
It was later recovered and returned to the shop.
Richardson was arrested by Northumbria Police officers working as part of the force’s Operation Soundwave initiative, which tackles those suspected of being involved in opportunist theft and burglary.
