A THIEF was caught stealing fake tan for his girlfriend from a Sunderland store.

Gavin Irwin shoplifted the tanning lotions - worth £37 - from Debenhams.

The 26-year-old, of Sea Road, Fulwell, was spotted by security officers and arrested.

He pleaded guilty to theft at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court.

Stan Sudworth, prosecuting, said it was about 3pm on February 13 when staff in the store spotted Irwin and his girlfriend on CCTV.

He said: “They saw Irwin and a female standing at the self-tanning counter.

“They saw him remove a security tag from two bottles of self-tan and place them in a carrier bag he was holding.

“He said they picked up the items she wanted, but they could not afford them, so he picked the tags off and put them in his bag.”

Joanne Gatens, defending, said Irwin, had taken the anti-anxiety drug Valium for the second time in his life.

She added: “He has no understanding of why he committed the offence.”

District Judge Roger Elsey adjourned sentencing until March 26 so pre-sentence reports could be prepared.
