THIS is the face of teenage rapist Oliver Garside who carried out a sickening sex attack because he could not afford a prostitute.

Earlier this week, the Echo reported how pensioner Garside was jailed after confessing what had done when his victim reported her ordeal to the police – bravely breaking her three-decade silence.

At Newcastle Crown Court, Garside, of Trent Street, Easington Lane, was jailed for eight years.

Judge Brian Forster QC read a report about the rapist before sentencing him.

The judge told him: “You told the author of the pre-sentence report you would rather have paid a prostitute but you did not have the money to do so.

“Your behaviour has cast a shadow over her life to date.

“Even today she has to live with what happened so long ago.”

Garside must abide by the terms of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order and sign the sex offenders register for the rest of his life.

Probation officials said Garside has “distorted views”.

Prosecutor Anne Richardson told the court the pensioner confessed to police he “regretted” what he did when he was finally confronted.

He pleaded guilty to two charges of rape and one of indecent assault.

Miss Richardson added: “This lady kept quiet for nearly 30 years. This has had a severe emotional impact upon her.”

James Adkin, defending, said Garside has committed no other offences before or since.

Mr Adkin said prison life will be difficult for the pensioner, who uses a wheelchair and recently broke a hip.

He added: “There will be little, if any opportunity for him to leave his cell as there are just no facilities for those suffering the disabilities he does.”
