Durham Police believe the cyclist, who lives in the area, was cycling along Burnhope Way towards the roundabout, and crossed as the silver-coloured Ford Focus was exiting on to Passfield Way.

He was taken to the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

The driver, a 39-year-old man from Thornley, and his passenger were both uninjured.

Investigators would like to speak with anybody who may have seen the collision, or seen the cyclist on Burnhope Way prior to the collision.
