A TEENAGER punched a former friend in a Sunderland club over a police statement given against her boyfriend.
Carli Wright’s boyfriend Jonathan Hanson had jumped on to the roof of a car she and pal Shannan Dowell were in one night, Newcastle Crown Court heard.
He was said to be holding a metal pole and demanding to speak to his girlfriend after she had ignored his texts.
He was later arrested. Although Wright, 19, refused to give a statement against him, Miss Dowell did.
The court was told that in a later statement to police, Miss Dowell said she was receiving counselling as a result of the incident, which took place in November 2011.
But when Wright spotted her celebrating a friend’s birthday in Union bar in Sunderland city centre, she questioned her and later attacked her in the toilets.
Prosecutor David Lamb, said: “As Miss Dowell walked into the toilets she felt a punch to the back of her head, assuming it must have been from this defendant Carli Wright.
“She began questioning what she had said in her statement.
“The defendant then punched Shannan Dowell, causing a burst top lip.”
In a victim personal statement, Miss Dowell said she broke down in tears and was physically sick after the attack.
She added that she did not want to go out in the city centre any more.
Wright, of West Farm, Seaham, admitted witness intimidation and assault by beating.
Lewis Kerr, mitigating, said Wright had acted out of loyalty to her boyfriend, who she has since split up with.
He added: “The fact she committed this offence is significantly out of character and unlikely to be repeated.
“This was a chance encounter when she was in drink, lowering her inhibitions.
“It was born out of a misguided loyalty to this young man she has now separated from.”
Wright was ordered to do 100 hours’ unpaid work and pay Miss Dowell £400 in compensation.
Judge John Evans told her: “You are still just 19 years old and you come from a respected family.
“One night your boyfriend chose to take you to task for failing to respond to his text messages.
“It is an unhappy fact that you resumed your relationship with him, and that you chose to take your former friend to task because she was out that night enjoying herself.”
