A SUSPECTED shoplifter has handed himself into police after seeing his picture in the Echo.

CCTV footage was published of a number of people police were hoping to trace in connection with thefts from stores in the Sunderland area.

One of them, Grant Leadbitter, 20, of Londonderry Street, Silksworth, Sunderland, contacted police and has been charged with the theft, earlier this month, of a digital radio from Sainsbury’s.

The images were released to the media as part of Northumbria Police’s Operation Soundwave.

Superintendent Alan Veitch said: “Part of the campaign includes releasing CCTV images of undetected offences to the public in an effort to identify people who can help with enquiries. Over 80 per cent of all shoplifting offences are detected – that’s four out of every five crimes.”

He added: “Those who aren’t identified and arrested instantly can expect to have their images released to the public, and this demonstrates that this also gets results.” Leadbitter will appear at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court on April 8.
