A DRUNKEN thief stole several kilos of bacon from a Wearside store.

Anthony Tumilty made off with £36 worth of meat from freezer shop Iceland in January, Sunderland Magistrates’ Court heard.

The 43-year-old was caught on CCTV picking up a whole tray of bacon before casually walking past the checkouts of the store, in Pennywell shopping centre.

The dad-of-three was arrested on February 5 and pleaded guilty to theft when he appeared in court.

He also admitted breaching a conditional discharge.

Heather Bolton, defending, said Tumilty had problems with alcohol in the past, and after nine years of being sober, he had recently fallen off the wagon after his marriage ended.

Tumilty told magistrates: “I’m just trying to get my life back together.”

He was sentenced to a six-month community order with supervision.

Tumilty was also told to pay £36 in compensation and a £60 victim surcharge.
