Sunderland students warned to keep their new Christmas presents safe as classes start back

UNIVERSITY students on Wearside are being urged to keep their new Christmas presents safe when they return to classes.

Northumbria Police is encouraging students to make sure they store their valuables securely and security log them.

Officers are also reminding students to make sure they keep their home locked at all times, including windows. Nearly half of student burglaries have happened in homes with open or unlocked doors or windows.

Sunderland Central Neighbourhood Inspector Mick Hall, said: “This advice is simple but effective in preventing opportunist burglaries. It only takes a moment to lock your home, but forgetting can leave you and your flatmates with the unpleasant task of dealing with a break-in and the loss of property.”
