A woman’s shoplifting spree in Sunderland city centre was cut short after she was caught out by CCTV.
Lilian Self, 49, stole items including candles, cosmetics, food, jewellery and books at the beginning of March, Sunderland magistrates heard.
Self, an unemployed factory worker, targeted retailers including Collectibles, Superdrug, Marks & Spencer, Tesco and Wilkinson, the court was told.
Prosecutor Keith Laidlaw said Self had been seen by a customer helping herself to candles at Collectables in The Bridges on Monday, March 2.
Staff were alerted and, on checking CCTV footage, she was seen placing the items into her shopping bag and leaving the store.
“A police officer on duty the next day received information that the defendant was on a bus in Holmeside,” Mr Laidlaw said.
A stash of stolen items was later found in her home in Runcorn, Ryhope.
Self was arrested and admitted two charges of theft, asking for a further eight offences to be taken into consideration.
She was given a 12-month community order, with a 20-day activity programme.
She was also ordered to pay a total of £209.60 in fines, costs and compensation.
