A THIEF dressed in a high- vis vest climbed a ladder to unscrew a CCTV camera from a Post Office.
The equipment was taken at 10.55pm on Saturday from the business in Villette Road, Hendon.
Officers are appealing for anyone in the area on Saturday night to contact them.
Sunderland Chief Inspector Jerry Pearson said: “This offender walked down Villette Road at 10.55pm on Saturday night with a ladder under his arm and in plain sight when committing the offence.
“Passers-by may have thought that he was a workman because he was wearing a high-vis vest and would have looked as if he was simply carrying out repairs.
“Offenders are relying on the public assuming they are workmen and hoping that they wouldn’t question this kind of behaviour.
“We have had a few reports of CCTV cameras being stolen across the Sunderland area recently and we need the public to report any suspicious activity to us whenever they see it.
“Any ‘workmen’ seen in unusual areas at unusual times can be reported to us and we can easily check if it’s legitimate.”
Anyone with information about the theft is asked to ring 101 ext 69191.
