A pervert who used a hidden camera to watch a woman undress has blamed “computer illiteracy” on keeping the sordid footage which led to him being caught.

Shaun Mitchell, 52, claimed he thought he deleted the footage which was found by a third party using his computer several months later.

He has now been handed an 18-week prison sentence, suspended for two years, and will have to sign on the Sex Offenders’ Register for seven years.

Mitchell, of Twickenham Road, Thorney Close, had previously pleaded guilty to observing a person doing a private act for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification at Sunderland Magistrates Court.

Prosecutor Sue Baker said the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was filmed, but the offence only came to light last year,

“It transpired he’s used a USB camera pen and has filmed her on two occasions, covertly, while she was undressing,” Ms Baker said.

Gerry Armstrong, defending, said: “There is only two occasions, where clothing was still on.

“The recordings were found by someone else, on the computer 10 months later.”

Mr Armstrong said Mitchell has no previous convictions and has said he has shown ‘genuine remorse’. “These are two very short incidents, which as far as the defendant is concerned were removed from the computer,” Mr Armstrong added.

“He didn’t look at them and they were found, probably, because of his computer illiteracy, thinking he had deleted it.”

Magistrates also sentenced Mitchell to two years’ supervision, and made an indefinite restraining order in respect of the victim.

He will also be required to live and sleep at his current address for a year and was told to pay £85 costs and £80 victim surcharge.
