Sunderland men charged over Whitburn Post Office robbery

TWO men have been charged with robbery after a raid on a village post office.

The incident happened at 11.30am on Friday, May 24, at Whitburn Post Office in North Guards, Whitburn, when a mobile phone was stolen from a customer during a robbery.

Andrew Ross, 31, of Aydon House in Sunderland, and David Roberts, 20, of Raby Street in Sunderland, have both been charged with attempted robbery of the Post Office and robbery of the customer in store.

Ross is remanded in custody to appear at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court this afternoon, January 16, and Roberts has been bailed to appear at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on February 18.

Detective Inspector Paul Woods said: “I’d like to reassure people that we take violent incidents such as this extremely seriously and there is no place for it in our communities. A thorough investigation has been taking place since this robbery happened.

“We have now charged two people in connection with it and they are progressing through the court process.”
