He said: "I want to express my sadness on behalf of the people of Sunderland at today’s sickening attack in Westminster.

"This was a cowardly assault on innocent people going about their ordinary lives.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragedy and with their families and friends.

"Any act of terrorism is to be condemned but today’s events are all the more shocking because they struck at the Mother of Parliaments - the very heart of our democracy.

"I know councillors will join me in denouncing this dreadful attack and sending our sympathies to the victims."
