Sunderland man injured in hammer break-in as police launch investigation

A man has been attacked with a hammer in his own home by two would-be burglars, police have said.

At around 11pm yesterday police received a report that two men had entered a house on Castle View, Castletown, Sunderland.

They assaulted the 34-year-old male occupant and proceeded to strike him with a hammer before fleeing the scene empty handed.

Emergency services attended and the man was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Officers continue to investigate the incident and are appealing for anyone who has any information, or saw anything unusual in the area yesterday to get in touch.

Extra officers will be in the area throughout the weekend to carry out inquiries and reassure any concerned members of the public.
