A SUNDERLAND man attacked his girlfriend after a booze-fuelled row on his birthday night out.
Daniel Smith pushed his partner into metal shutters, and was spotted lifting a traffic cone over his head when police arrived to deal with the dispute.
Officers had been alerted after the incident was caught on CCTV cameras.
The 24-year-old, of Villette Path, Hendon, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault by beating.
He was handed a 12-month community order with 130 hours of unpaid work, at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.
Valerie Bell, defending, said: “Both had been drinking for his birthday. She wanted to go to a club and he wanted to go home.
“Things got out of hand. He says it wouldn’t have happened had he been sober.”
