Sunderland man attacked girlfriend when she spotted him dancing with another woman

A MAN attacked his girlfriend after she spotted him dancing with another woman in a club.

Magistrates were told Michael Willis, 26, of Sidecliff Road, Roker, pulled his partner to the floor by her hair and grabbed her by the throat at the home they shared.

At South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court, he pleaded guilty to assault by beating and criminal damage and was handed a 10-week jail term – suspended for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay compensation of £197 for damage caused to a door and a lamp during the row, court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £80.

The court was told the row broke out at an address in South Shields where the couple – who have since split – lived, and was sparked after she saw Willis dancing with another woman.

Willis attacked her before the victim managed to call police and he was arrested. Dave Errington, chairman of the bench, said it was a “sustained and violent attack.”
