Sunderland man accused of pulling the veil of Muslim woman in court on race attack charge

A man has appeared in court accused of violently pulling the veil from the face of a Muslim woman in a busy shopping centre.

Peter Scotter, 55, was at Sunderland Magistrates' Court in relation to the alleged incident in The Bridges on July 3.

He has been charged with racially or religiously aggravated common assault, in relation to the Muslim woman.

He also faces a a count of causing racially or religiously aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress, to a female police officer during his arrest.

Scotter, of Beach Street, Roker, did not enter a plea to either charge.

Prosecutor Laura Lax said the incident occurred at 3.30pm outside a shop, where the woman was waiting for her husband, with her nine-year-old son.

Magistrates' bench chairman Robert Dash said: "The bench declines jurisdiction

"We are therefore going to refer you to Newcastle Crown Court and that case will be heard on August 16 at 10am.

"You will have conditional bail, not to communicate with prosecution witnesses and not enter The Bridges shopping centre."
