POLICE sniffed out a crime when they caught a young dad in possession of drugs.
Ryan Craigs, from Sunderland, had cannabis stashed under the front passenger seat of a car he was travelling in when it was stopped by officers in South Shields.
Craigs, of Cricklewood Road, admitted the drugs were his and was arrested.
The 19-year-old pleaded guilty to possession of a Class B drug at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
James Long, prosecuting, said: “The defendant was a passenger in the car stopped by police because of how it was being driven.
“When the car was stopped, officers could smell cannabis coming from it.
“They carried out a search and found cannabis bush under the front passenger seat and also found two grinders, two pipes and a bong.
“He was arrested and when interviewed by police, said he had purchased the cannabis and had panicked and put it under the seat when the car was stopped by police.”
Laura Johnson, defending, said: “The cannabis was for his own use. He works as a labourer and has two children, aged three and one.”
Magistrates gave Craigs a six-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £15.
