POLICE were hunting for a hit-and-run driver who left behind a trail of destruction after smashing a stolen car into other vehicles.
The driver of the blue Ford Fiesta collided with another vehicle after taking the 57-plate car from the Tesco Extra car park, on Roker Retail Park.
The Fiesta then sped on to the forecourt of Justin Oxman Cars in Roker Avenue, where it crashed into two vehicles before driving away at speed.
Co-owner of the car sales business Nigel Oxman, said customers were forced to jump out of the way to safety.
The 39-year-old gave chase in his own car, but was forced to give up and leave the matter to police.
“It was some absolute nutcase,” he said.
”Basically, he’s hit a car in Tesco over the road and someone has tried to chase after him.
“He’s come along Roker Avenue and tried to take a short cut through our forecourt, thinking he could just cut straight through, but we have a fence so they were trapped.
“So, the driver then reversed at full speed and crashed into two of our cars and two people on the forecourt were forced to jump out of the way.
“I tried to chase him, but he got away.”
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “At 11.30am we received a report of a road traffic collision.
“A Ford Fiesta collided with another car in the Tesco Extra carpark at Roker Retail Park.
“Inquiries are ongoing to trace the Fiesta and the driver.”
