In a message posted to the Durham and Cleveland Road Policing Unit’s Facebook page, the team said: “He stopped the vehicle to find a female in the front passenger seat in the very final stages of labour!

“He quickly rushed the mother to hospital and we are now keeping our fingers crossed for a safe delivery. Good luck.”

The officers later issued an update to say they were “over the moon” to announce the birth of a girl named Arabella.

She weighed 6lb 10oz and both mum and baby are doing well, with the team sending their congratulations to the family.
