Pc Paul Harris in Wraith Terrace, Ryhope. There has been a number of car-related acts of vandalism around the area.

PATROLS have been stepped up after a spate of car break-ins.

Police officers have been pounding the beat in Ryhope after vandals targeted vehicles overnight between Wednesday, February 6, and Thursday, February 7.

Thugs smashed their way into vehicles in Skipsea View, Withernsea Grove, Esdale, Wraith Terrace, Smith Street and Smith Grove.

The thieves stole items including satnavs and CDs, while leaving owners out of pocket.

Inspector Jamie Southwell, who covers the Ryhope area, said: “Officers are making inquiries into this theft and want to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen anything suspicious.”

He added: “Extra officers are on patrol in the area as part of Operation Balloon, which includes both uniform and plain clothes officers.”

“We also want to remind motorists to remove any valuables from their vehicles when they park. Please keep valuables out of sight to help us prevent opportunist crime.”

Also, on Tuesday, a car parked in Hurstwood Road had a wallet stolen from inside, a purse was taken from another in Sandalwood Square, and a Stihl saw stolen from the boot of a car at Australia Tower.

All three were unlocked and the stolen items left out on show.
