A SHOPLIFTER claimed he was just looking at garden furniture when collared by security staff.
Kevin Guiheen was stopped leaving the Asda store in North Road, Boldon Colliery, with a trolley full of items worth £220.
The 41-year-old was at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court on Friday, and admitted the theft, which happened on May 29.
Keith Laidler, prosecuting, said: “He was pushing a shopping trolley which was covered by a large pack of toilet rolls.
“He made his way to the exit of the store and made no attempt to pay for the goods.”
The court heard Guiheen, of Aberdare Road, Sunderland, told security staff: “I shop here all the time – I was just looking at the garden furniture.”
Kate Lewis, defending, said: “He had £70 on him but as his trolley filled up he was not going to have enough money to pay for what was inside.”
Guiheen was fined £100, ordered to pay costs of £85, and a £15 victim surcharge.
