POLICE are searching for someone who might have fallen from the Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland.

Just after 5pm on Wednesday police were called to the bridge after receiving a report of something falling from it.

Searches of the area and river have been carried out by officers from Sunderland Area Command and the Marine Unit, accompanied by the Coast Guard and aerial searches were conducted.

However, no body has been found.

Inquiries have also been made in relation to anyone missing from the area which have also proved negative.

Police say they will continue searching throughout Thursday but think that what fell was part of the wooden gantry from underneath the bridge.

An inspection of the bridge is due to take place today by the local authority.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101, extension 69191.
