POLICE investigating disorder after the Tyne-Wear derby in April have charged 40 more people with offences – bringing the total charged to almost 90.

Violent scenes erupted in Newcastle city centre on Sunday April 14 after Sunderland trounced the magpies 0-3 at St James’ Park.

Chief Superintendent Gary Calvert said: “There have already been people jailed for their part in the disorder and these sentences should act as a warning for others – particularly with the next derby match happening in the coming weeks – thinking of getting involved in this type of disorder that they can expect to be put before the courts.

“They have also been given banning orders preventing attendance at football matches, and those still going through the court process have bail conditions preventing them from attending Newcastle matches.

“We won’t tolerate any violence or disorder and the actions of those after the derby are in no way a reflection of the behaviour of true football fans, who want to enjoy the match in safety.

“The investigation into the disorder has been ongoing and 40 more people have been charged with offences and are now going through the court process.”
