A SHOPLIFTER stole candles and wine to give to his ex-girlfriend.

Daniel Carrington, of High Street East, Sunderland, took the items, and a bottle of coke for himself, from Asda and Next in South Shields, in September 28.

The 37-year-old was spotted on CCTV putting them in his bag and was arrested nearby.

Glenda Beck, prosecuting, told South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court: “He told the officers he was planning on giving the wine and candle to his ex-girlfriend.”

Christopher Brown, defending, said: “He has a lot of issues because of an unfortunate history of Class A drug abuse.

“Those drugs no longer trouble him, but going into shops and taking items is something that he should not be doing.”

Magistrates adjourned the case until October 29 for the probation service to prepare a report.

Carrington was granted conditional bail.
