Police are appealing for witnesses after a robbery a petrol station in Sunderland.

The incident happened at 1.28am on Friday, January 3, at the Esso Service Station on Durham Road.

A man approached the service station from the forecourt, he threatened staff and demanded cash. He then came into the premises and stole a quantity of cigarettes and alcohol before leaving.

Police were called and carried out enquiries at the scene.

A 31-year-old man was arrested a short time later and is in custody helping with enquiries.

Police are appealing for witnesses, anyone who was in the area and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious is asked to contact them.
