THE body of a man pulled from the River Wear is believed to be that of a missing pensioner.

Police and firefighters were called to a spot near to Framwellgate Bridge in Durham at 3.30pm yesterday.

Officers cordoned off the bridge, near to the Bishop Langley pub, while the body was lifted from the water.

Durham Constabulary has said it believes it is of missing man Robert Porter.

The 78-year-old from Spennymoor was reported missing in the early hours of yesterday by staff at the supported living facility where he lived.

A post mortem examination will be carried out later on today and a formal identification will follow.

The death at this stage is being treated as non-suspicious.
