The death is not thought to be suspicious, but residents living near the Seaham Lodge Garage on Stockton Road, spoke of the grim discovery made almost immediately behind their homes.

One woman said she first noticed police activity outside her house at about 10.30am.

By 12.15pm a crime scene investigation van had arrived.

The woman, who did not wish to be named, said the police activity centred around the entrance to a bridle path, which is surrounded by heavy vegetation, which leads from an area between the houses on Stockton Road, and Field House Farm.

“The police wouldn’t tell us anything, but my neighbour’s son went down there and said he could see the outline of a body,” she said.

“It’s all very frightening, I’m too scared to go down there.

“There have been lot of curtains twitching in the street.”

A spokeswoman for Durham Police said: “A cyclist has been found dead on a footpath in Seaham.

“Police were called to Stockton Road in Seaham just before 10.30am by two dog walkers who had discovered a body near to the walkway next to Seaham Lodge Garage.
