A RECRUITMENT drive is to be launched to help make the streets safer.
Challenge 1,000 will begin in East Durham on Saturday, when police and community leaders reach out to residents and encourage them to sign up to their Neighbourhood Watch scheme.
It aims to add 1,000 new members, and start up groups in areas where there is not one in operation.
PCSOs will canvass homes, pass on crime prevention advice and messages of how Neighbourhood Watch membership can help reduce insurance bills by up to 15 per cent.
For details call PCSO Sarah Willis, community liason officer, on 375 2617.
