A CRACKDOWN on under-age drinking has been launched in Durham.
Operation ARIES – Alcohol Related Intervention Enforcement Support – aims to tackle youngsters who do drink, and to educate younger ones not to abuse alcohol.
Representatives from Durham Police, Durham County Council, retailers and health professionals have joined forces with Community Alcohol Partnerships in communities across County Durham.
Durham Police believe they are the first force in the country to use the multi-agency approach simultaneously across all of a force’s area.
ARIES lead officer Sergeant Mick Urwin said: “Young people need to understand the potential risk to their health that drinking alcohol creates.
“With the help of our partner agencies and organisations we are able to offer support to young people and their families so they not only stay on the right side of the law, but also avoid the path to vulnerability and ill-health.”
