HOUSEHOLDERS are being urged to lock their doors and windows following a spate of sneak-in burglaries in the north of Sunderland over the weekend.
Four homes in Wallace Street, Southwick Road, Sea Road and Cartwright Road were targeted by thieves at various times between Friday and Monday.
In three of the cases, burglars took advantage of doors or windows which had been left unlocked.
Items stolen from the homes include a laptop, a purse, a mobile phone and jewellery.
At least one of the burglaries was committed while there were people in the house.
Inspector Tony Carty, of the Sunderland North Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We are appealing for witnesses to these burglaries, but we also want to remind people to make sure they keep their doors and windows locked at all times.
“It literally just takes seconds for a sneak-in thief to get into your home if they’re left unlocked.
“Once inside, they’re free to help themselves to your property.
“Please help us to prevent crime by securing your property.
“Remember, if you do see someone acting suspiciously where you live, ring the police straight away.
“You could help to prevent a crime.”
